Harvest
When to pick
- Slicers: 6-8 inches long, firm, dark green
- Picklers: 2-4 inches for best texture
- Harvest before they yellow — overripe cukes are bitter and seedy
How: Cut stems with a knife or pruners. Check and pick every 1-2 days in peak season — they grow fast. Regular harvesting keeps plants productive.
Storage: Wrap in a towel and refrigerate. Use within a week. Don't store near tomatoes or bananas (ethylene gas hastens decline).
Common pests and problems
Cucumber Beetle
Signs: Yellow-green beetles with spots or stripes, chewed leaves and flowers, wilting (beetles spread bacterial wilt)
Control: Row covers until flowering. Hand-pick beetles. Yellow sticky traps. Apply kaolin clay or neem oil. Remove any plants with bacterial wilt immediately — it's fatal and spreads.
Powdery Mildew
Signs: White powdery coating on leaves, starting on older leaves
Control: Improve air circulation. Water at soil level. Spray with milk solution (40% milk/60% water) or potassium bicarbonate. Choose mildew-resistant varieties.
Squash Vine Borer
Signs: Sudden wilting of one vine, sawdust-like frass at stem base
Control: Wrap lower stems with foil. Row covers until flowering. Inject Bt into stems if caught early. Plant successive rounds.
